The Nakusp and Arrow Lakes region has traditionally relied on a resource-based economy, centred around logging and agriculture. Two large Tree Farm Licences encompass much of the region, with Woodlot Licences and BC Timber Sales also contributing to the local economy. The rich soil in the valley bottoms has benefited the agriculture and farming industry since the first homesteaders arrived over 100 years ago.

Manufacturing
With the close proximity to the forest resource, many small businesses in the area produce value-added wood products. Local mills produce lumber, shakes and shingles, profiled logs and poles for hydro and telephone companies.
Also located in the region are manufacturers of unique products which sell internationally.

Residents in the Nakusp and Arrow Lakes region rely on the resources provided by the land, and have a great respect for the renewal of these resources.

Forestry – The vast amounts of Provincially-owned Crown Land in the region are administered by various organizations. Forests outside the Parks and Protected Areas are managed under agreements with Tree Farm Licencees, Woodlot Licencees and the Ministry of Forests’ BC Timber Sales.

Agriculture/Farming – The soils and climate of the Arrow Lakes region sustain a vibrant agricultural industry for a variety of fruit and vegetable products. Farms of all sizes raise cattle, sheep, goats and other livestock for the local market and beyond. An ostrich farm surprises travelers on Highway 6 near Edgewood.
Mushrooms – The forests of the region have become well-known as a source for a variety of wild, edible mushrooms. The species of mushrooms harvested include morels, pine mushrooms and chanterelles. Established mushroom buyers in the area purchase the daily harvests from the mushroom pickers and process them for shipping. The bulk of the harvest is exported to Europe and Japan.

Some local restaurants harvest or purchase these mushrooms as well, so their guests can enjoy these delicacies.
